After several years in National League three CS returned to London One North, and although it was a home fixture it was played at Staines RFC rather than Dukes Meadows where a cricket match was taking place.
The match started with North Walsham kicking long at the kick off which CS cleared to touch. NW won the line out and in the ensuing play CS twice infringed but North Walsham took full advantage and scored on the opposite wing. Despite the conversion being wide out the fly half converted for a 7 – 0 lead.
On 11 minutes CS were awarded a penalty in their own half and took a quick tap and run, it initially appeared that they had wasted the opportunity by failing to spot a pass to support in space but when No 8 Guy Van den Dries got the ball be barrelled over; Tom Hodgson converted to square the match 7 – 7.
North Walsham then had a penalty attempt and although it hit the post they were rewarded with a 5 metre scrum after CS knocked on, but CS gained a penalty from the twice taken scrum but soon after lost the ball again and a North Walsham prop scampered under the posts 7 – 14. During the remainder of the half CS started to gain territory and on 28 and 34 minutes were awarded penalties both of which Hodgson converted for a half time score of 13 – 14.
The second half started as the second finished with Hodgy converting a penalty and CS took the lead for the first time, and then a few minutes later after NW kicked deep, Houstoun the CS full back broke, he fed the wing who then passed inside to Ant the scrum half who scored for Hodge to convert with CS now two scores clear 23 – 14, and should have closed out the game. However only five minutes later a deft chip by the NW fly half resulted in a try by their full back which was duly converted 23 – 21 to CS.
After 63 minutes NW were reduced to 14 men for ten minutes but CS twice declined two kickable penalties and wasted the opportunity to score during the temporary advantage, which proved costly. On 78 minutes CS were themselves reduced to 14 men, and on 82 minutes the NW fly half converted a beautiful drop gaol to take them into the lead 23 – 24. CS reacted well and worked play deep into NW’s territory but the final action was an attempted drop goal by Hodgson that drifted wide. Next week CS are at home – Dukes Meadows against Harrow.
