Weekend Update – Saturday 22nd March 2025
Vets Day: How good was it to see so many old faces down at the club last Saturday, to catch up, and celebrate the great season we have had so far! Thanks to everyone who made it the pre-match lunch, the game to follow, and the team really enjoyed having the former players there. A fantastic time was had by all. After drinks at the bar, boeuf bourguignon followed by chocolate fudge cake, and a glass or two of Whistling Duck red wine excellently dished up through the Kings House catering team, Honorary Club Secretary said a few appropriate words to the gathering, and welcomed our guests for the day, Maidenhead Rugby Club (who incidentally came to us off the back of a good win against Jersey their last match). The game itself was held on the 3G pitch, and soon spectators and players alike had to scramble off for twenty minutes as a severe thunderstorm passed right overhead (with accompanying close proximity lightning). Also, a further lengthy stoppage second half, due to Stags flanker Zinny Norman succumbing to a nasty snapped ankle injury – we all wish Zinny the best, and a speedy recovery.
Match: CS Stags 1863 29 – Maidenhead Rugby Club 17: And so, to the match itself. With relatively warmish, often raid sodden, thundery, and cloudy conditions, CS Stags opened the scoring on the 3G with a run down the right wing by Adam Clark. Maidenhead drew level after a to and fro tussle, 5-5, finding a rare break through the rock solid Stags defence. Then our boys added a couple more tries through Kain Rix and Bertie Watson, with John Hargreaves converting one, to go in at half time 17-5 up. There was a long gap before Adam Clark ran in his second try (and bonus point score) for our fourth, and then Ted Wainwright adding a fifth to bring the score up to 29 for Stags, with another conversion added by John Hargreaves. Two yellow cards in the last ten minutes for Stags, and a lot of Maidenhead pressure, saw them claw back the score to 29-17 adding two more tries, and that’s how the match ended, with a 5-3 try tally to the Stags. Another solid win for the lads, keeping this strong run going, and five more league points – well done boys! Tries: Adam Clark (x2), Bertie Watson, Kain Rix, Ted Wainwright. Conversions: John Hargreaves (x2)
Match: Worthing Raiders (II’s) 0 – CS Staghounds (II’s) 61: I don’t have much detail at present, but the Staghounds went away to National League Worthing II’s and came away with a decisive victory, four tries (+). Well done to the team, and this retains their position at the summit of the league. Keep close tabs on to the run in for this great season! I shall be posting further later this week on match details for the remaining last game for each side. CS Stags 1st XV are away to Old Alleynians in Dulwich on 5th April. But first the Staghounds 2nd XV travel away to Dorking on 29th March, for what could be the league decider for champion spot! Meanwhile, enjoy the photo’s attached of Saturday’s match and the Vets Day (Facebook and LinkedIn only). Warm wishes to all!
